WEEKLY RIVER REPORTS

2010-2011 SEASON

2011

December 28th

The river levels have been fluctuating on an almost daily basis over the last week with the trend now seemingly a downward one. The level this morning was just under 1.5m and coloured but clearing nicely and not muddy at all. The temperature over the last wek has been quite favourabale and has helped the fish stay in a feeding mood, having said that the fishing has not been easy by any stretch of the imagination with the somewhat blustery winds not helping in the comfort stakes and the level around the 2.3m mark. The river has been carrying a fair amount of debris making life difficult at times but fishing in these circumastances can quite often bring rewards. With this continued spell of milder weather I would expect a few fish to those who make the effort. Barbel have been taken in the last few days, albeit in the higher water conditions just proir to Christmas and the couple of days following. All that remains to be said for the next few days is good luck, best wishes and a happy new year.

December 14th

River this morning still rising after rain from the weekend and beginning of the week. Level rose to 2.3m Friday dropping and rising again to 1.8m by Sunday/Monday then dropped again to 1.5m before rising once more to an indicated 2.39m @10:00. The river is carrying a certain amount of debris and rubbish. Keep an eye on our blog for more recent updates however the majority of anglers now given up the ghost and the banks are desserted.

December 5th

With the weather turning colder the last few days it seems as though winter is starting to make itself known. The majority of anglers have now desserted the bankside, obvious by their absence, and have now hung up their rods till next season. The banks have been desserted for the last month. Problem is that some of you have been missing out on some fantastic fishing since my last update albeit turning a little quiet on the catch front the last few days. Prior to the beginning of December the river had maintained a fairly stable level (around 0.7m) and the temperature had been creeping down ever so slowly. This meant stable conditions for the fish which resulted in some fantastic captures for the few anglers who did venture onto the banks. Most of the fish caught averaged around the 8lb mark with 4 new PB's for a couple of anglers and no less than 7 double figure Barbel in the last 2 weeks alone and these are just the ones I know of. The relatively (!) mild conditions for the time of year have obviously had a knock on effect on the fish and they have continued to feed well. Cast your mind back to this time last year; we had already had our first snowfall which then stayed for the duration of December and into January and the river actually froze solid bar a small section on Sydney avenue and the weir. Overnight temeratures regularly hit minus -8 or -10c dropping to minus -15 on more than one occaision. This month we are only just starting to get our first frosts of the season and daytime temps of 6 to 8c. Angler numbers per day can be counted on one hand and I do not see that number increasing as the forecast for the next week is a little grim. However if you keep an eye on the river conditions and the weather there is no reason why you can't have a good day on the river. Aim to be on the bank for mid to late morning and fish thru the middle of the day to make the most of it, if you are prepared to sit it out  then late afternoon as the light fades can still produce a few surprises. The river is currently dropping froom 1.5m to just over 1.1m but the temp for now is dropping to a registered 6.4c this morning following those frosts. All that needs to be said is pick your day, wrap up well and enjoy some fantastic fishing.

November 13th

River reports for the last month are up on our blog. You can follow the links from the home page on our website or search for SAFtalk. Look for the MOSTLY BARBEL link and click on CURRENT RIVER CONDITIONS. Sunset times are currently 16:20 so please vacate your fishery by 17:30 latest. Thank you.

September 19th

Please take the time to read the notes on Sept 7th and Aug 26th.

September has certainly arrived in style with some fantastic captures over the last two weeks. The Barbel have really switched on and are in an autumn feeding mood. The banks are again mostly desserted thru the daytime but anglers arriving for short evening sessions fishing until dusk have been rewarded with some wonderful captures. Most rods taking a couple of fish in a couple of hours which is par for the course but some amazing specimens too have also been taken.

Some of you still push the boundaries when its time to go home and are staying until 10 or 11 at night making all sorts of excuses.

Sunset time for this week is 19:16 which means you have until just 8:30 AT THE LATEST. Not 9:30, not 10:30, not 11:30, not "just one last cast", Away by 8:30 or risk loosing your permit.

September 7th

If you have not already read he report below then please take the time to do so (Aug 26th).

A rising river with level currently 0.9m and rising. Fish responding well to fresher water.

Another moan in as much as already this week two anglers fishing for Barbel with just 4lb and 6lb main lines. We consider this to be too light for Barbel and recommend an absoloute minimum of 8lb b/s mainline, 10lb preferred. Please take note.

September 1st

If you have not already read he report below then please take the time to do so (Aug 26th).

Fishing this week has seen an upturn in catches. Still a little slow thru the day on the whole but some wonderful specimens to be reported. Good bags of fish taken in short sessions too, You just need to be in the right spot. The popular pegs seeming devoid of fish so look to concentrate on other areas you would normally walk past. A touch of water in the river mid week may have helped a little as the level rose just a few inches bring a little fresher water. Generally quiet on the banks so choice of swims is yours. As always keep an eye on the blog for more recent updates.

August 26th

Low and slow seem to be the keywords here. Fishing generally very slow with the best chance seeming like early AM. For more up to date reports keep an eye on the blog.

On a different note, some of you out there are still using 'DEATH RIGS'. ie rigs that do not allow the lead to come free should your line break. Two identified on Sydney Ave this week alone. It was purely sheer luck that one of the gentleman in question was using an inferior hooklength of low breaking strain which allowed his fish to escape with just a hook in it's mouth instead of a 2 oz lead and long length of nylon. All this I saw with my own eyes as I stood next to him whilst he played the fish.

If in doubt use a running lead with a stop bead, leger stop even a split shot. If using a safety clip ensure it will actually release under pressure and not pushed on hard to a point where it would require a train to pull it open.

DO NOT TIE YOUR LEAD ON OR CLIP IT TO YOUR HOOKLENGTH SWIVEL. If you are found using this type of set-up you will be banned from the fishery without fail, no questions asked. It is dangerous and inconsiderate for your quarry.

August 22nd

River is running at NSL @ 0.5m with a stable temp. Colour is a reddish brown with some clarity. Catches have been sporadic, generally fishing a little slower but good size fish to be had in the right spots. For more in depth and up to date info keep an eye on the SAFblog (current river conditions under the Mostly Barbel link).

August 7th

Low and clear!

July 22nd

Catches were up as the river began to rise and prior to the rise but as the levels have dropped the catch rate seems to have tailed off slightly. Things should settle down in the next few days. Still fishing relatively well for the time of year.

July 19th

A rise in river levels due to rain over the weekend. Check out the CURRENT RIVER CONDITIONS under the MOSTLY BARBEL link on our blog for more details. You can click on the SAFblog link at the top of the main (home) page or try using the following link. http://saftalk.shropshireanglersfederation.in  the blog is available to all to view but you must be an SAF season permit holder and be registered with the blog site to be able to post your comments.

July 16th

Again we had a good flush of water through the river last weekend and again catches seemed to take a dip. Not everyone was blanking don't get me wrong but fewer fish on average were landed. I guess the river peaked at around 1.1m late Saturday and has continued to drop off well throughout the week As it has done so the fish have started showing again. I guess I can understand this as the river at the beginning of the week was a very dirty, silty, well coloured, muddy river that would be enough to put any fish off! Some notable catches through the week though have included a couple of specimen size Barbel and the best short day session recorded was a limit of 9 fish. There may have been more but unless you get in touch and let us know we will never know. Take up on the SAFblog has been very slow and it seems as though as anglers we are happy to reap the benefits of free information but reluctant to give any. A few more members regularly posting would be nice to see. If you fancy joining in the SAFblog then go to our website or the SAFtalk blog pages to find details of how you can join. It is free to join and open to any full SAF season permit holder. The pages can be viewed by any visitor but you must be a member to be able to post a comment. Rain forecast for this weekend may well have an effect on the river again come the start of the week. Keep checking in for regular updates.

July 4th

Last weeks flush of extra water has now dissapeared altogether and the river is now back to it usual summer condition, albeit a touch on the warm side with the water temperature now up to 18 deg c. The water is carrying a little colour still but is running fairly clear and level around normal for this time of year. Fishing has been better than is normally the case at the beginning of the season with the majority of anglers managing a fish or two, some lucky anglers getting 10 or more fish in a visit. Evenings have been the most popular by far but catches remain fairly consistent throughout the day. Early morning have seen desserted banks with the majority of anglers making for an aftrenoon or evening session. Most usual Barbel tactics are scoring, again the majoritty of anglers choosing pellet. A word or warning- WORMS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON SYDNEY AVENUE AT ALL- it seems that some confusion is arising with some anglers preferring to believe this applies only to the weir pool. It states very clearly on your permit and a number of anglers have been caught out. It applies to the entire length of the Sydney Avenue fishery. Your permit will be signed, confiscated and/or you will be asked to leave the fishery.

June 26th (Sunday)

Well a totally different river greeting us all this morning. Almost persistent rain since Friday, thru Saturday has had an immediate effect on the level. With the river rising for the first time since February it has dislodged an awful lot of trees, rubbish and huge rafts of debris/sticks/leaves you name it. The colour has changed dramatically and the temperature of the water has taken a tumble too with an indicated 14.4c at 10am sunday morning. A few fish were banked early doors on Sunday but since the change in conditions is seems to have put the fish off for the time being. Most guys on the bank who decided to have a go are struggling to cope with the extra flow not being prepared for the conditions they faced this morning. Level is now around 1.5m and still rising. If you plan a visit then we suggest an Avon style rod of 1.5lb test curve minimum with a reel mainline of at least 10lb. Leads ranging from 2-4oz maybe even 5oz, an ounce heavier if using a feeder. If you fancy a few hours then the sunshine is wonderful for spending a few hours on the bankside. T least you should catch a tan if no fish!

June 23rd

With the season now well into its first week things have been perhaps a little better than expected. The fishing was a little slow for the first few days with angler numbers down, especially the first big weekend. A few mornings there have been empty banks. Hardly believable just 2 days into the new season. In general though the fishing has picked up since Sunday with fish coming from the more pacey water and the popular swims already taking a battering, getting plenty of attention, with an almost constant stream of eager anglers. Good catches across the board considering the river level/time of year etc. Tuesday saw overnight rain that slowly pushed the level up to approximately 0.8m Thursday and added an extra tinge of colour. Mixed bag weatherwise for the next couple of days with a promise for warmer spells Sunday/Monday. Majority of the guys fishing pellet and hemp/pellet in the feeder. Meat scoring well too. Water temp Thursday 9am was 15.9c at the weir.

March 12th

Well after the terrible winter it seems as though the river has come on form just in time for the end of the season with some fantastic captures being logged. Mostly Chub and Barbel and maggot the bait. If you are lucky enough to get on the river today or tomorrow best of luck. Please remember *no worms allowed on Sydney Ave.* The river currently running average winter level and very clear with a tinge of winter green and a temp of 7c.

February 10th

The floodwater is dropping well and the level is currently around the 2m mark. The river peaked at just under 4.5m on Monday. Prior to this the fishing was hard and not a lot being caught. The final of the river classic was appauling with just 5 fish caught between 32 top anglers. For the specimen or pleasure angler the results were mixed. The two weeks prior to the floods the river conditions and weather were constantly changing. Having said that some fantastic fish have been banked. An accidental capture of a small Salmon, a 2lb plus Roach and an 8lb plus Barbel taken in foul, freezing conditions. Photos should be up on Fishy Fotos by now. For the next few days I suspect Barbel will be the main species with the Chub turning on as it clears. We'll see what the weather brings. At least the first glimpse that spring is on its way is that I can already notice the onset of dark getting slowly later each day.

February 7th

Flood alert in place. River currently around 3.5m and rising.

January 17th 2011

Firstly a Happy New Year to you all.

The new year certainly will be a talking point for a while to come. A good fall of snow two weeks before xmas stayed well in to the new year. Night time temperatures were averaging  -8 with -10 and -15 on more than one occaision. The river remained frozen solid above the Castle Walk footbridge all the way thru the town centre and above. Because of the increased flow around the weir and Sydney Avenue this was clear of ice in the main channel but the margins were frozen in most swims to around 12-15 feet from the bank. Swim choice was limited to around one or two swims at best here. Most anglers stayed at home, best place really as fishing was difficult to say the least. One or two chub fell to those who cared to brave the conditions plus a few dace here and there. Fast forward a few weeks, the thaw well underway, milder weather, rain and the river is now currently rising and was around 2.85m at 19.00 17/1/11. The level has remained constant at around 2.5m for the last 4 days along with a water temperature of 7.4c but is now rising steadily. Predictions are for a peak of 3m in the early hours.

2010

December 9th

The cold now making its mark with the river freezing in the margins and above Greyfriars the river solid with ice across its full width. River temps are exceptionally low and where ice free, running well clear. Level today at lunchtime was an indicated 0.62m. The air temp for the first time in weeks was above freezing and around 4c this afternoon.

December 1st

The cold weather is now well and truly with us. Night-time temps have been down to minus 7c or so, continually. Just minus 3 or 4c the last few nights. The days not a lot better with 2c about the best, generally less. Obviously snow everywhere and a very cold river. I had a good peer into the water today and you could easily see a few feet down so very clear, although the colour of the water over the weir had a certain milky-ness to it. I can only hope that the fish will become a little bit more used to the cold conditions and maybe feed. The Pike seem active enough. I'm planning to fish before the thaw sets in as that will make life even harder. I have never done 'well' when snowmelt water is in the river. Having said that, if the water temp goes up I will find it difficult not to fish for Barbel. Levels are dropping slowly and evenly, creeping down a few inches each day, currenly just under 0.75m. Very cold on the banks.

November 24th

After a flush of extra water late last week, the river level now continues to drop. It rose to around 1.5m on Friday with a little extra colour dropping now to an indicated 0.92m at the Welsh Bridge. Not seen any Barbel caught recently and the match weights in the Quarry (4th round qualifier) were appauling. However a few regulars got on the stick float and maggot both on the river and Rea Brook and had great fishing. Dace and Roach mostly with the odd few Grayling too. Chub have not really shown yet in the usual haunts, perhaps conditions not to thier liking. A promised cold snap this week will see the water temperature take a tumble and what with clearer water the Chub may show. I suspect the Barbel will be thin on the ground until the onset of milder weather and warmer water. Mind you, it should bring the Pike anglers out. Remenber to wrap up and bring a hat. Sounds like your gonna need it!

November 8th

With the river currently running at 1.7m and 8c the sharp drop in tempertaure may well kill the chances of any decent fish untill a little warmer water enters the river system or the fish adapt to the conditions. Plenty of rain forecast for this week so levels will be high and fishing will be tricky. Air temperatures have plummeted into single figures.

November 4th

Tuesday saw a steep rise in river levels as they shot up from 0.8m to 2m. A small amount of water has run off thru the day but the current level is now back around the 2m mark. Fishing has been very difficult due to the amount of debris coming down the river but fish have fed well at times. Please keep a close eye on the river level if you are fishing and watch out for any  rise  or change in river conditions.

October 18th

The river has dropped slowly over the last 2 weeks and is now currently around 0.7m and carrying a touch of colour. Fishing has been slow for Barbel and Just a few Chub showing the last few days on waggler. Lots of blanks and just a handful of Barbel coming out, quite often in the last hour of the day. Last weeks match reports were poor. The evenings are drawing in and getting cooler all the time with the sunset now just a few mins. after 6pm. This weeks forecast is for cold northerlies featuring for the main so it will feel chilly on the bank. We have had the first few frosts of the autumn and the water temp is slowly dropping. Please leave your fishery by 19:30 latest.

October 6th

The river peaked at around 2.2m on Monday bringing with it lots of debris making fishing a little tricky. Levels are now dropping steadily showing an indicated 1.25m and is still coloured. Barbel have been taken but not in the numbers normally associated with high, coloured water. Sunset time for this week is 18:35.

September 30th

Sunset time for the next 7 days is 18:49. You must vacate the fishery by 20:00 latest. Anglers are still ignoring this and will have their permit signed and/or confiscated.

September 27th

The last week has continued to produce some good fish but has slowed a little on the whole over the last couple of days. Levels have been up and down and conditions fluctuating. If you were on the river at the right time you caught well, If you timed it wrong you didn't. Water temperatures have been falling slowly with a more sudden dip over the last 24 hours. Don't panic, its still mid 11c so nowhere near winter temps and about perfect! Water level is falling steadily for the last 3 days and this morning at 11:30 it was an indicated 0.69m at the Welsh Bridge. Air temps have taken a tumble and now getting very 'cool' in the evening so bring a good coat. Autumn is here.

Numbers of fish banked have been down with a few anglers suffering the dreaded blank. No pattern emerging as to what time of day, if anything early morning seems best bet for a fish or perhaps a mobile approach as a few anglers have caught fish 1st or 2nd cast only to stare at motionless rod tips for the rest of the day. Short evening sessions not producing much either. If the water continues to clear I would suggest using smaller baits for the Barbel and Chub.

Roach, Dace, Bleak and Gudgeon! coming to the float fishermen trotting pink or white maggot under a stick. Quite a few Eels showing too with a couple of 2lb+ fish taken on successive nights (safely returned). Quite a few to regular Barbel baits too so look out! A reminder that all eels must now be returned, law! If you do hook one and it is deep hooked do not attempt to remove the hook. Cut your line as close as is possible and return safely.

September 21st

As predicted the flush of water has made a defnate difference to catches in the last week, the Barbel simply revelling in the conditions. Lots of fish caught, plenty of specimens and a good handfull of double figure fish to those prepared to make the effort. Sunset time for this week is 19:11 so you must vacate the fishery by 20:15 latest. A few anglers are choosing to ignore this. Take heed of this warning, your permit will be signed or even confiscated. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

September 15th

The last week has certainly been better as far as fish caught. The river rose rapidly on Saturday morning to around 1.3m and then dropped off slowly over the next two days. It is these last 2 days that have seen more fish banked. 4 specimens to one angler in just 90 mins. The river rose again thru Tuesday evening and today at 18:00 hrs it peaked @ 1.89m for the Welsh Bridge, the river now carrying around 5' of muddy floodwater with lots of debris. This is the first time the river has had a half decent 'flush' of water so lots of rubbish being swept along, I even saw a fridge this evening! The river currently dropping a few inches thru the course of the evening. I am hoping it will follow the trend of the weekend and continue to produce as levels subside. Sunset time for this week is 19:25 so please vacate the fishery by 20:30 and remember NO TINS!

September 6th

Having been away from the river for a while the catch reports are missing for last week so only have my own results to go by. I have only been out twice trotting for Barbel on a low and slightly coloured river Severn. Alas I found the Barbel hard to tempt fishing just a short evening session with my favoured swims producing one missed bite. The weather for the past week has been fine for sunbathing but perhaps not ideal for Barbel fishing. The bright conditions along with low water would seem to favour small baits through the majority of the day. The rain has arrived on Monday evening with constant heavy showers well into dark and more forecast for Tuesday. I would expect the river to colour up over the next 24-48 hours but we would need a serious amount of rain to make a serious difference to the level with maybe a rise of 2-3 feet the best we can hope for. This should hopefully send the Barbel into 'feeding mode' as they endevour to pack on a little weight before the onset of winter. The sun is now setting at 19:46 hrs so evening sessions are becoming shorter and you should be leaving the fishery by 21:00hrs latest.

August 28th

The last two weeks have seen a down-turn in catch rates on the whole but fish are still there to be found. Considering the conditions and weather we have had since the beginning of the season the river has fished remarkably well so it's no surprise that we have hit a slow patch, it was long overdue. Last weekend, following a day or two of rain the river coloured up well and rose a couple of feet over Friday night. As a result the fish put on a good show and plenty of Barbel fell to regular tactics. The level dropped almost as quick as it rose and colour fell out over the next few days and fish became a little harder to tempt. Having said that, two anglers on Sydney Avenue at the beginning of the week both had red letter days, one landing an impressive 7 fish, the other 11. Both in short evening sessions. I sat with one angler for an hour and his rod tip hardly stopped moving. Every single fish bar one 3lb'er was of specimen proportions with a couple over the magic double figure mark. A tremendous achievement. The current temerature of the water is now slowly falling to more 'normal' feed inducing levels so hopefully the Barbel will soon be on the prowl hoping to stock up on their reserves before the onset of winter. In my opinion the best time to be on the bank is over the next month or two as Autumn creeps in and for those willing to put in the time and effort the rewards can be great, just ask those two anglers!

Sunset time is just around 20:30 hours so please vacate the fishery by 21:15 - 21:30 at the latest.

August 3rd

River is now back to NSL and still continues to fish well for the time of year. Smaller baits favourable in the now clearing water. Angler numbers are seriously down so feedback is hard to come by. With the river fishing OK I would have expected the banks to be lined with people.

Sunset time is currently 21:00 exactly so please vacate the fishery by 22:00 latest.

July 27th

As it happened the river did rise quickly to a maximum of around 1.7m so just over 4 feet. The river remained heavily coloured for a couple of days while the levels dropped and is now nearing its normal summer level (NSL) but still with a heavy peaty brown colour to the water. Catches have remained consistent if a little sporadic. Mainly Barbel. All baits working with a few on sweetcorn too. One or two blanks here and there but most catching.

We are now well past the longest day of the year and the sun is setting around 21:11 hrs so you must leave the fishery by 22:30 latest. A few have been ignoring this. Be warned, your permit will be signed or even confiscated.

July 21st

Wednesday morning saw a very brown coloured river. Levels started rising rapidly throughout the day and by late tea time was slowly making its way up the bank. Platforms will be covered and the river will be carrying a lot of debris. Please be aware of rapidly rising river levels.

JULY 7TH

With the season now well underway things seemed to have settled down a little and regular catches to most rods reported. Monkmoor and Sydney Avenue fishing well for the Barbel and one or two specimen Chub. Smaller Chub also making up the odd catch on Sydney Ave. too. Pellet seems to be the favoured bait with mornings and late afternoon the best time. Fishing has been steady or perhaps better than expected considering the bright sunshine, low river and warm water conditions. At least the water colour is favourable with just a hint of colour. The faster water seems to be holding the higher numbers of fish with odd catches in the slower, deeper water. A few anglers reporting of good sized Bream coming out to 'alternative' Barbel methods, the biggest 7lb 8oz. Rumours of a few Perch putting in an appearance and also Eels too! Please take care handling Eels and do not attempt to remove hooks from any deep hooked fish. Cut your line as close as possible to the hook and carefully release. Barbless hooks are obviously favourable.

JUNE 25TH

The first week of the new season now behind us and both good and bad reports. The initial start to the season was very slow, just odd fish being caught and any numbers of fish coming from just one or two swims on the whole of all stretches. The initial flurry of activity now passed, things have settled down in way of angler numbers and on the whole the banks have been quiet. The fishing has picked up in the last 4 or 5 days and the Barbel especially seem to be loving the conditions at the moment. Most noteable catches are plenty of specimen Barbel in excess of 8lb. All the fish have been fighting fit but we still request that you return your fish very carefully and ensure that the fish is capable of swimming off strongly before releasing. A few Barbel have been spotted floating downstream gasping at the surface as a result of being released prematurely. Please take heed. Pellet seems to be producing the goods but maybe thats down to the fact nearly everyone is using them!

JUNE 15TH

With just one day left till the new river season starts it's time to start getting excited. More rain over the weekend has really coloured the river and it now has the colour of chocolate once again. The level is up slightly but not enough to make fishing difficult and with the colour of the water I would expect a good start to the 2010 season. The pegs along Sydney Avenue have been tidied and are now ready, easly accessable and looking wonderful. Water temperature for the 14th June@09:00 was 15.4c. Don't forget to bring your unhooking mat and a bag to put your rubbish in. Just to remind you that fishing is allowed from sunrise to sunset and night fishing is not permitted. We hope you have a great start to the 2010 season.

JUNE 10TH 2010

With the new season fast approaching work is well underway to have the banks ready for the 16th. Grass cutting and strimming, fixing pegs etc and a general tidy of all the banks should have everything looking great. Please keep it looking like this and take your litter home. Heavy rain earlier in the week has coloured the water up well and it is now a thick dark brown colour and looks like coffee. As a result fish spotting is not possible but they have been fairly active in the last few weeks flashing over the shallows and making themselves quite visible. River levels have remained low all through the close season with the level hardly moving at all from the 0.5m summer average. With the very cold temperatures and weather we had earlier in the year the fish were very slow to show themselves with water temperatures remaining unseasonably low. Even with the heavy mid week rain [this week] the level failed to rise much more than around 8" at most. Water temperature at the moment is down slightly on last week and is currently in the low 15c range. If you are planning a visit around the 16th then expect the water to be coloured still even though the river should be back to normal summer level (NSL). Above all, good luck and tight lines.
