2009-2010 SEASON

WEDNESDAY 20TH MAY 2009

A steady supply of rain over the last week has well and truly coloured up the water to a dark peaty brown. Level is only slightly up on NSL and currently @ 0.85m. River temp. is 11.5c. Pre-season weed growth is good with healthy beds of streamer weed apparent in the weeks proir. Barbel spotted in the shallower sections along with plenty of Chub. Siver fish dimpling on the calmer days/evenigs. More rain forecast may see levels rise slightly. One or two Salmon anglers taking advantage of the fresh water. Bankside vegetation is well established with Cow Parsley and Nettles about 3 feet high! Trees now almost in full leaf. Pools currently fishing ok on the better days with plenty of Carp basking in the sunny spots.

TUESDAY 2ND JUNE

Well just about 2 weeks to go now and the murky brown water is still with us although the level is now closer to normal summer level (NSL) at around 0.55m. Water is dark brown making spotting any Barbel difficult, I guess they must be spawning by now.

Bankside clearance has now started along Sydney Avenue. The pegs and swims had become almost invisible over the last 2 months due to the high grass/nettles etc. The work will continue over the next 2 weeks and by the 16th they will all be totally accessable and tidy with the grass mown and side of each swim well strimmed to allow plenty of room for all of your gear. We will be keeping an eye out for anyone leaving litter so please remember to take it home with you or bag it and bin it. Our bailiffs will also be checking your EA licence so please make sure you have one with you if you intend fishing. Also make sure you understand the fishery rules before you start fishing.

THURSDAY 4TH JUNE

Water looking less murky but still coloured. Bankside clearance continues on Sydney Avenue with shingle area receiving some attention.

TUESDAY 9TH JUNE

A week to go now and the river is well coloured and looks like chocolate. Heavy rain over the weekend pushed up the level a touch and dropped the temp a touch. Level is currently around 0.7m and was (on Tuesday) dropping. Heavy rain on Wednesday may cause the level to rise again.

Bankside clearance is progressing well and once again you can see the river. Some pegs yet to recieve a final 'strim' before the 16th. Not long now!

Check out the new Welsh Bridge 'high cam' on the link below LINKS AND INFO at the top of the home page.

FRIDAY 12TH JUNE

River not as heavily coloured but still with lots of suspended silt. Level around 0.76m and temp @13c.

SUNDAY 14TH JUNE

Levels dropping steadily the last few days. Now around 0.5m (almost NSL) and still with a good bit of colour. Heavy rain forecast for Monday afternoon Midlands/North Wales. Weather warnings in place. Expect heavily coloured water and posibly rising river levels for the start of the season.

Please keep an eye on the river levels. The river Severn can rise a number of feet in a matter of hours and can be quite unpredictable. Exercise extreme caution, please take care and act responsibly.

Our agents and Bailiffs will politely request to see your EA licence before issuing you with a permit. Please do not forget to bring it with you as you will not be issued a permit without it.

TUESDAY 16TH JUNE

First day of the season and the fish are in an obliging mood. Water temp is 16.4c with a brown-ish colour. Heavy rain not yet having any effect with the level just around 0.6m.

TUESDAY 16TH JUNE (eve)

Barbel putting in an appearance but generally in single numbers to most rods. Maggot, meat and pellet the scoring methods with maggot producing the better or most fish. A few Chub but sport generally slow. Banks quite busy.

TUESDAY 23RD JUNE

The first week in and things were looking good. Most rods landing just one or two fish before lunch. Dropped off a little now with most fish coming early to mid morning. one or two evening fish, sport generally slow. River clearing. Temperature constant around 15c.

THURSDAY 25TH JUNE

Sunny bright days making fishing very hard and slow with the possibility of one or two later on. River is very low but with a touch of colour. Maggot seems to be doing the trick in most cases.

WEDNESDAY 1ST JULY

Fishing picked up a little over the weekend with around an extra foot of water and a little colour. Warm days have slowed the fishing again recently with few fish nice being caught at the start of the week as the river cleared, mostly on meat. Water temp has been creeping up slowly day by day and is now over 20c. River level is very low and a dark brown peaty colour.

THURSDAY 2ND JULY

High water temperatures and depleted levels of oxygen in the water means that any fish, especially Barbel, are taking a while to recover after landing. Please can we ask that you ensure your fish is fully recovered before releasing.

Either support them in an area with some flow, facing upstream or, support in a large landing net untill they are ready to be released. This can take up to 30 mins or more in periods of hot weather. If you are using an unhooking mat (and you should be), please ensure it is wet and well cooled with river water before placing a fish upon it. The welfare of the fish should be your priority at all times.

Thank you.

River is still very low and very warm. 21.7c this evening. Very few fish caught today.

MONDAY 7TH JULY

Generally slow and patchy.

MONDAY 13TH JULY

Nothing different to report. Very slow all week. Oddf fish taken near faster water. River up to around 0.7m amd well coloured. Temp up a degree or so. Meat and pellet or boilie.

Our agents and Bailiffs will politely request to see your EA licence before issuing you with a permit. Please do not forget to bring it with you as you will not be issued a permit without it.

FRIDAY 17TH JULY

Extra water in the river mid to late week has raised the levels a little and coloured the water which now looks a brown, coffee colour. Thursday saw around 2 foot of extra water on, but by Friday am it had dropped to around 0.7m. Temp is down a degree or so. Fishing has improved with most rods taking regular multiple catches mostly to pellet. Don't forget your brolly as more heavy rain is forecast.

Next update in a week or so.

SUNDAY 26TH JULY

River levels have been fluctuating all week, averaging around the 1 metre mark most of the week but touching 1.5m last weekend. Fishing has generally been good. Best catches around the beginning of the week with most rods getting a few fish. Rain forecast for this week may see levels rising again. Please watch out for slippery muddy banks.

We have noticed that anglers are still not recovering fish (Barbel) properly before releasing. This was highlighted on Friday evening, as fish were spotted floating down the river on the Sydney Avenue fishery belly up, gasping at the surface. None of the anglers on the bank would own up to releasing fish prematurely.

Please can we ask that you ensure your catch is suitably recovered and that they are ready to swim off safely before releasing. Please rest them in a large landing net in an area of sufficient flow untill they are ready, or hold them in the current, facing upstream until they are ready to swim off. Please do not be tempted to release them immediately after capture as this threatens the fish's welfare.

SATURDAY 1ST AUGUST

Bad Angling Practice

A WARNING TO ALL ANGLERS

The DEATH RIG.

This rig was recovered from a 7lb 2oz Barbel and is of the fixed lead type. You can clearly see where the lead has been fixed to the swivel with a lead clip. The fish that was landed had been towing this rig and 3oz lead around for some time and it was just by sheer luck that the trailing line was caught by another angler. This type of rig is extremely dangerous, inconsiderate and is not allowed.

If you must use a bolt rig please ensure that you use a semi-fixed set up (sliding buffer bead/float stop etc) or a safety clip that will allow the lead or feeder to come free should your line break. This will prevent the fish becoming tethered. Your utmost consideration should be the fish's welfare in all instances.

If you are found to be using this type of setup you will be asked to leave the fishery immediately and banned for life.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

SATURDAY 8TH AUGUST

Generally good fishing for the last 10 days or so with most anglers reporting multiple catches and fairly steady fishing. Catch rates perhaps tailing off a little mid-late week. River is clearing and not far off normal summer level.

WEDNESDAY 12TH AUGUST

Sport seems to have picked up a little in the last couple of days. Good catches all round, generally evenings, mostly to meat. River carrying a little colour and slowly dropping to just above NSL. Temp for the 11th was 18.8c. Some showers today, mild with light breezes.

WEDNESDAY 26TH AUGUST

A funny few weeks, fishing well beginning of last week with the river at NSL and running clear. Most anglers managing a few fish daytime and evenings to most styles. Smaller baits producing more numbers of fish with bigger baits accounting for some bigger specimens. Sport slowing a little over the weekend with a few fish coming out early evening to dusk to those that have made the effort. The banks have been queit this week so little to report. River is currently low with a little extra colour today. 5 rods on Sydney Avenue this evening with only one blank by 8pm.

The Sunset time is currently 20:08 so you must vacate the fishery by 21:30 at the latest (1 hour after sunset).

SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER

3 or 4 feet of extra water 2 weeks ago really stirred things up and the fishing has been fantastic with some wonderful specimens being landed. Scince last weekend the fishing has slowed somewhat with a lot of anglers struggling to catch. Most of the fish landed this week have come early or late in the day with catches improving over the last few days. Most fish falling for pellet with a healthy spread of smaller fish to trotted meat or maggot. Above the weir catches have been improving but Roach not showing in any great numbers. Stick or waggler accounting for most. Predatory fish also making a showing in a few spots. River level is currently near NSL at around 0.55m and low to mid 14c with just a touch of colour.

Sunset times are currently 19:10 so please vactae the fishery by 20:30 at the latest.

WEDNESDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER

Fishing has slowed condsiderably over the last week with very few fish caught. River is low and clear. Moving baits scoring the odd bonus fish. Few more Barbel caught today but you have to work for them. Cooler weather and low pressure for the weekend may improve things.

Sunset 18:49.

THURSDAY 15TH OCTOBER

Heavy rain last week raised the river levels by a couple of feet and coloured the water nicely for a spot of Barbel fishing. Trouble was that the Barbel were not quite so obliging with fish few and far between, even for those fishing just into dark. The river dropped steadily over a couple of days and is now near NSL @ 0.6m. Still colour in the water, now more of a greenish colour with still only a couple of fish per session. Meat seems to be scoring well in most cases with maggot second best. Match weights for the quarry were around 5lb of Dace and the odd Chub or Perch. Roach still not showing in any great numbers. Rea Brook fishing well to the fly prior to the extra water. It should be running clear by now. Water temp is now mid to high 10*c. Forecast is mild for next few days.

Autumn is now on its way with cooler evenings and mornings and the leaves are falling on Sydney Avenue and the Quarry with the sligtest breeze. The frosts will soon be here so now is considered to be the best time for a specimen.

Sunset time is currently 18:14 so please vacate your swim by 19:30.

WEDNESDAY 21ST OCTOBER

Heavy rain overnight, and later in the afternoon [Wednesday] has done little to raise the river level yet with the level hovering around the 0.5m mark at the weir. Temperature is dropping but not rapidly. 10.3c Tuesday am. Fishing for Barbel perhaps a little better than last week with fish location the biggest problem. Catches seem quite localised with just a few other bonus fish here and there. All the fish seem to be in wonderful condition and hard fighting so don't go too light on those hook-links please. 8lb minimum advised. Meat and Maggot scoring over pellet.

Sunset for this week is 18:00hrs.

TUESDAY 3RD NOVEMBER

Some fantastic specimens have been landed over the last 3 or 4 weeks with the low water conditions doing little to put the fish off, especially for those prepared to work for it. All of the fish landed have been stuffed so it shows that they have been feeding in earnest but perhaps for a limited time of the day. Heavy rain the last few evenings has pushed the river levels up and coloured the water. The level is now halfway up the bankside and currently dropping from 2.2m at the weir. Temperature has dropped suddenly over the last 2 days and is 10c. This may put the fish off for a while. With more rain forecast I would expect the levels to rise again towards the end of the week. If you are thinking of fishing Sydney Avenue Sat. 7th November then only a limited number of pegs will be available.

Now the clocks have changed the sunset time is currently 16:35 so you must vacate the fishery by 17:30. Some anglers are choosing to ignore this. You will be warned once and if caught a second time you will have your permit confiscated and you WILL be banned.

WEDNESDAY 4TH NOVEMBER

River levels peaked out Monday eve @2.2m. Tuesday saw it fall to just under 2m, but it rose thru the night to just around 2.2m. Wednesday saw a reading of 2.1m at the Welsh Bridge as the river dropped off again. Fishing is 'tricky' not helped possibly by the fall in water temps.

A match along Sydney Avenue is due to take place this Saturday the 7th November (if conditions allow). Fishing will be restricted.

THURSDAY 5TH NOVEMBER

River is rising and is currently around 2.5m @00:00hrs. If you choose to venture out please exercise extreme caution. Be aware of the river and your surroundings. Keep a constant check on the river level and your surroundings. The river can rise extremely quickly. The banks are extremely dangerous.

SUNDAY 8TH NOVEMBER

River levels have been dropping thru Sunday and currently around 1.95m.

MONDAY 9TH NOVEMBER

River currently running at around 1.65m and temp at low 8c.

FRIDAY 13TH NOVEMBER

An exicting week as the river levels continue to drop. Fishing over the last weekend was fair for those willing to brave the floods but the drop in water temperature slowing the sport somewhat. As the week progressed and everything stablised the fishing improved with a few specimens turning up again for those who braved the weather and river conditions. As I write this the rain is lashing down and the river levels are rising once more and with strong winds and heavy rain forcast the fishing this wekend will be a little uncomfortable.

THURSDAY 19TH NOVEMBER

River levels rose to 2.2m over the weekend befre dropping to around 1.7m. Continued rain over the last few days has now put the river on FLOOD ALERT with the level currently around 3m. Strong winds and heavy rain forecast for the next few days will make fishing difficult at best.

We do not advise fishing in these conditions at all.

SATURDAY 21ST NOVEMBER

The level has been dropping slowly since Friday aftrenoon and is around the 2.9m mark. Everywhere the banks are still covered and we do not suggest venturing onto the banks.

SUNDAY 22ND NOVEMBER

River dropping slowly, currently 2.7m.

TUESDAY 24TH NOVEMBER

River levels rising again, currently 3.1m @09:00. Flood warning.

SUNDAY 13TH DECEMBER

The river has had a good flush out in the past few weeks with river levels almost constantly at flood levels making fishing difficult or almost impossible at times. As a result the banks have been very quiet with only a few floodwater anglers venturing out. Barbel have been few and far between but with the onset of colder weather and dropping river levels I would expect the Chub and Roach to start showing. Low water temperatures could make the Barbel fishing slow and would be looking for milder periods. Ideal time to search out those Pike as they seek out the shoals of silver fish, perhaps with a roving approach.

River levels are currently around 1.5m+ and should continue to drop over the next week. Most pegs and platforms should be accessable by Monday or Tuesday, however do take care as the river will have deposited mud and silt and they will be very slippery.

TUESDAY 5TH JANUARY 2010.

Fishing has been quite tough over the last few weeks with the river conditions keeping the majority of anglers away. Prior to Christmas the conditions were ideal for a spot of Chub fishing or Roach and Dace on the stick but post Christmas the temperature dropped, the levels rose and things became a lot harder. The two Saturday opens were cancelled due to high river levels. As the river dropped, so did the temperature. Nightime temperatures of minus 6 or 7 have made fishing very slow, the only hope that fishing will pick up a little as the fish become accustomed to the cold water. Chub, Pike, Roach and Dace should be the winter quarry with perhaps the silver fish shoaled up.

TUESDAY 12TH JANUARY

Anglers on the bank this week have been in single figures (just one or two) but the rewards are there for those prepared to make the effort. Levels continue to drop along with the water temperature too. Ice flows over the weekend and frozen water in the margins made for a spectacular sight and landing fish from some swims became impossible due to the ice. The banks are frozen solid and can be very slippery with all the ice and snow so if you venture out then please take care. There is a large amount of snow lying on the ground here and surrounding areas which will have a serious effect on river levels once the weather warms a little. Wrap up warm and bring gloves, a hat and a flask of hot tea or coffee.

FRIDAY 15th JANUARY

ADVANCE WARNING

An advance warning for possible flooding following recent heavy snow.

Following the recent snow and prolonged cold snap we are expecting a flood risk as the weather warms a little. There has been a good fall of snow on the Welsh and Shropshire hills which will enevitably end up in the river system once the temperatures rise. Intermittent rain early on Friday morning has already washed a lot of snow off the pavements locally and is set to continue as the amount of water locked up in frozen ground and snowfall that has been building up for the last few weeks now starts to melt.

If you are thinking of visiting the river soon the please keep an eye on the river levels via our daily level check, the river reports page or the webcams. Flood alerts will be posted up on this page. Please take care as the banks will be extremely slippery.

SATURDAY 30TH JANUARY

Following the recent cold snap the river levels rose as expected and made fishing very difficult. Although there was very little rubbish coming down the river as is normally the case with high river levels the high water and low water temperature made fish very hard to find in a feeding mood.

Levels have dropped off well over the last week with the river taking on a nice winter green with just a hint of colour. Anglers have been scarce and those that ventured out have had little to talk about in the way of catches. Chub and Roach seem to be the favoured species with just two hardy Pike anglers in the Quarry on a very cold January day. Today (sat) sees the river level up around 8" with atouch more colour and the sunshine bringing a few more anglers out. I would expect the water temperature to take a slight dive once the localized snowmelt makes its way into the river. Maggot seems to be the favourite choice for most.

MONDAY 1ST FEBRUARY

Remember that the Salmon season starts today so special rules now in force for the weir pool on Sydney Avenue.

Rules are listed on our SYDNEY AVENUE page and also signage attatched to the gate at the weir pool.

FRIDAY 12TH FEBRUARY

Well once again the weather has been a little unkind and the fish hard to find in a feeding mood. Match weights were well down on the Quarry matches. The Rea Brook has continued to fish well with many report of fish being caught. We had a big fluctuation in temperatures and levels with around 4 feet of water in the first week of Feb. in the Severn which really put the fish down for a week or so. The river has recoved nicely and odd fish are being caught at the beginning of this week, perhaps tailing off a little as the week went on with clear skies and falling temperatures. The river is currently around 3.3c and I would now expect a rise. A noteable catch to John Williams last Sunday who fished stick float/maggot  and landed a fine 5lb 9oz Chub. I would expect maggot to be favoured bait as we draw to the end of the season.

Only 4 weeks to go now so dust off your tackle and get out and enjoy some fine late season fishing. Always known to throw up a few surprises.

WEDNESDAY 17TH FEBRUARY

The last few days has seen a marked improvement in the fishing with Chub really coming to the fore. Some fantastic specimens have been landed and on Monday of this week Roger had 22 nice size Chub to waggler and maggot. The bright sunshine has made fish a little hard to tempt at times. Wednesday saw a slight rise in river levels but the water remaing relatively clear. Temperatures are on the rise. Things can only get better as the season draws to a close.

FRIDAY 19TH FEBRUARY

The river is carrying a little extra colour after recent rain/sleet/snow but has continued to drop since wednesday. Fish are coming out but it is very patchy. Pike seem to be pretty active.

MONDAY 1ST MARCH

The last two weeks have seen some excellent fishing if you happen to be in the right spot. For the very few anglers that have actually made the effort found themselves in the wrong spot and most went home with dry nets. Angler numbers over the last two weeks could have been counted on one hand so there is not an awful lot of feedback from the bank at present.

The last week of Feb saw levels fluctuating a little but remaining mostly low at around the 0.8m mark with the water a lovely winter, bottle green, so indicitive of good Chub fishing. As the weather once again turned cold and snow came down the water temps dropped but the Pike were still very willing to take a slowly twitched bait and great sport to be had on an otherwise cold and dismal day. As the weekend approached the water coloured and now at the start of the week the river screams Barbel. It would just be nice if the Barbel were screaming 'food'  !!!

Expect the next two weekends to be busy on the bankside as the majority of anglers will realise that this is the last chance of the season they will get and will dust of their rods laying idle since October, hoping that it will all fall into place and the river will come on song just in time for the last weekend. How convenient. All I can say is you have already missed lots of good fishing. Good luck if you manage to get out and don't forget to check your reel lines. Remember when fishing for Barbel we advise a mimimum line B/S of 8lb. Take note.

MONDAY 8TH MARCH

Well a week of heavy frosts and plummeting overnight temperatures have done little to riase the river temps as it continues to hover around the mid to high 4c mark, not bad considering. Daytime air temps have been fairly warm at around 8 or 9c and feeling very pleasant in the bright sunshine. Temps soon start to fall away tho as the sun sets. Barbel are not really showing in anything but single numbers to a few, but most other species have been taken with a little work and effort. A hefty catch of specimen Perch to one of our regulars with specimens close to 3lbs, a good haul of nice size Chub on the float fished maggot to another local angler and a 6lb Bream to one surprised and pleased regular visitor. The Rea brook continues to fish well and is a very much under used fishery. It holds species of all kinds and is perfect for the roaming angler or one who travels light. Great sport to be had on bait or fly. Current river conditions for the Severn around and below Shrewsbury are a water temperature of 4.8c on Sunday afternoon with a level of 0.7m. The water is fairly clear and of a green-ish colour.

Anglers have been present in greater numbers and as we approach the showdown weekend when things come to an end for a while I hope to see a few more out. I hope that everything falls into place for the last weekend and you all have a great end to the season.

I wish you all the best of luck and of course, tight lines.

Simon.
