The river level has been fluctuating around the 2 metre mark and the temperature has been between 6 and 9 degrees C. Not ideal conditions what with the inclement weather so no surprise that anglers on the bank have been scarce. However the odd bonus fish has been the reward for those hardy few. Currently the river is on flood alert with the level rising steadily and currently running at 2.5m. The flood barriers are being erected on the Frankwell car park this morning. Don't forget the new permits come into force on the 1st January 2012 January 10th High levels have been the feature of the last week once again. The river peaked at around 3.4m here in Shrewsbury and remained 'high' for 24 hours before dropping quickly to just over the 2m mark. The rate of fall has slowed somewhat now and the level today is an indicated 1.76m. Temperatures have been borderline making the fishing slow, the high water not making life easy for the odd angler who braved the conditions, most of the time I was the only one fishing. The milder weather the last few days have encouraged a couple of more anglers out of the house and pleased to report that Barbel have been landed. If you are to venture out onto the bankside soon then please exersise caution as the banks will be very muddy and slippery following the recent floods. Sunset time for this week is 16:20 so please be packed up and away by 17:30 latest, and don't forget your new permit. Permits available from either TOTAL ANGLING or Frankwell post office. January 15th River levels continue to drop and are nearing normal winter level (NWL) and so has the water temperature. Hard frosts and overnight temperatures of minus -5 have taken the water temp down to just 4c this morning when I checked. Still carrying a little colour but looking good otherwise, however I expect the banks to be quiet for a while until we get some milder weather. This I reckon will be sometime mid-week according to the forecasts I have been hearing when milder temperatures are promised. January 27th River levels have been fluctuating a little for the last 2 weeks. After falling from the high water conditions the previous week this was followed by another rise to around 1.5m and then another rise a few days later to around 1.4m. River is currrently 1.2m and coloured following the weekends rise. Prior to that I have been setting my stall out for Chub and have had a pleasurable couple of weeks. We are now in the limbo state between good fishing conditions for either Chub or Barbel, niether being fantastic. Barbel are still coming out in the last few days mostly Chub prior to that. February 1st The last week has seen mostly empty banks [bar one or two anglers] and I guess this is down to the weather, most anglers not wanting to brave the conditions. Generally it has been cold and the fishing slow, especially toward the end of last week. This week the cold has settled in a little and brought with it chilly, bitterly cold north-easterly winds. I have still been concentrating on Chub whenever possible, although until the last few days the conditions have been far from ideal from my point of view. We had a slight rise in levels toward the end of last week and the water coloured up a little. Add to this rapidly falling water temperatures and I can understand why the banks have been desserted. As this week progresses the conditions should improve, water temperature will stabilise, levels will settle down and the water will become more clear. By the weekend conditions should be spot on and I would consider it an ideal time to fish for Pike, Perch, Chub, Roach or Dace. We have just over a months worth of fishing time left and I intend to make the most of it. With a bit of luck I may even see you on the bank. February 6th The weekend saw quite a few anglers on the bank, mostly Piking and although the river was starting to colour up from the snow/rain a few fish were landed. Sunday saw a few more out but the river was starting to take on a milky colour. I fished for Chub and blanked and I think a few others did to. Water temp is still low but better than it was at the end of last week. Level up slightly to around 1m and more coloured.
