The Monkmoor Fishery

The Monkmoor Fishery

The Monkmoor fishery is large, well over a mile of unspoilt right hand bank fishing and can be divided into three main sections. At the top end of the fishery, referred to locally as the gypsy stones, the fishery begins. The middle section is the Uffington middle stretch (between the two road bridges) and the lower section that joins the Belvidere Wood fishery is below the second road bridge.

The Monkmoor fishery is guarded by a secure locked gate, a key for which must be obtained before fishing.

The cost £3, available from Total Angling.

This aerial shot shows the entire length of the Monkmoor fishery. In this photo the river flows from top left hand corner to bottom right. Fishing is on the inside of the loop (right hand bank).

The fishery offers a wide variety of features to suit both coarse and Salmon. The top section of the fishery is noted for its deep holes and 'Salmon lies', before narrowing slightly, passing through a shallow gorge and increasing pace over a fast rippled layer of bedrock. The main flow then pushes toward mid-river creating some very productive pools and eddies. Many specimen Barbel, Chub and Salmon can be found. Good Pike and Perch fishing can also be found below these rapids to lure or dead-bait. The river then glides swiftly alongside the island which is typical Chub territory to either stick float, waggler or quiver tip.

This shot below clearly shows the access road (white line crossing the photo diagonally). The start of the fishery is just out of shot on the bottom left hand side of the picture. Here the river rushes through a fast shallow rapid before slowing and passing alongside the island an flowing under the first road bridge.

The middle or Uffington stretch.....(photo below)

The middle or Uffington stretch begins below the first road bridge and ends at the second road bridge. The river here naturally curves almost 180 degrees as it bends round to the right. Please note the car park indicated by a white patch bottom centre of picture.

DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE ACCROSS THE FIELDS TO DROP OFF YOUR TACKLE.

YOU WILL BE REPORTED AND REQUESTED TO LEAVE THE FISHERY IMMEDIATELY.

Typical Barbel country. Lots of slacker water on the inside, plenty of bays and overhanging branches on the far bank. Plenty of variation in current and depths from deep dark holes and gutters to shingle beaches and shallow streamy runs with prolific weed growth toward the second road bridge. Many Barbel are taken along the entire length of this section with some notable Chub catches and excellent Pike fishing in the slower water.

This next shot shows the fishery from a different angle. The bottom section is visible in the bottom left corner. Also notice the access road to the car park. Please use it and remeber to close the gate afterwards otherwise the livestck will get into it and damage your or somebody elses vehicle.

The bottom section caters for all styles with a good spread of all species. A fairly straight run in the main but not without its features. Excellent Pike and Perch fishing to be had at the lower end near the 'outlet' where it joins the Belvidere Wood fishery.

The banks along the Monkmoor fishery are high and can be very dangerous in muddy or wet conditions. Please take care.

On approaching the fishery and passing through the locked gate please ensure the gate is locked securely behind you before following the access road. The access road bends to the right and follows alongside the A49-A5 link road before crossing a cattle grid and turning left under the road bridge to the car park. Park in the car park/paddock and again ensure the gate is closed behind you to keep the livestock out. They will damage your car.

You may not under any circumstance drive your car along the bank to drop off your kit or tackle.

If you do you will be asked to leave the fishery immediately.

A maximum of two rods at all times irrespective of how many rod licences you have.

Rods may be placed a maximum distance of 3 metres apart.

No bait allowed in tins, bottles or jars. Please use a plastic container or bait box.

You must use an un-hooking mat if fishing for Barbel or Pike
