Shrewsbury River Classic 2010 –
Results Qualifier 4 Sponsored By Fox and Sensas
Saturday 20th November –
The Fourth and last Qualifying match, which was sponsored by Fox and Sensas was fished on the river Severn at Shrewsbury. 41 Anglers fished another gruelling five hours on the County Ground and Quarry Sections to secure a place in the Final to be held on December 4th.
The river had been high for the previous two weeks and the match postponed twice. As the level was still not ideal at 1.38metres and dropping, a decision was made to go ahead and hope the fishing would be better than the previous three qualifiers.
Historically with high water and frost the winter fish move into the town. Sadly again this was not evident and shows there are serious fish stock problems at Shrewsbury.
Simon Deakin (Ludlow) took top spot in the main frame with an eel of 1-9-0.His fish fell to worm and feeder tactics on peg 65. In second spot was Phil Williams (Telford)on peg 45 weighing 1-7-0 of small Dace. Phil’s dace were caught on straight lead and maggot tactics. Pete Williams (Chester) on peg 57 weighing 1-3-0 was third and George Crawford (Johnstown) peg 86 fourth with 0-5-0 of bits.
6TH MARCH 2010
There looks to be serious problems with the Quarry and County ground sections and the whole of the Severn in general. These were the thoughts of the 19 matchmen that turned up for the latest open, and their concerns where justified if the results of the match were anything to go by considering the river was in perfect trim with just a spattering of silver fish being caught and large Perch making up the frame weights .
Midlands matchman Phil Wiliams led the way with a chopped worm attack on toll bridge peg 75 working at eight metres he had eight samples for 11-0-0.
Above the winner on 74 was Fosters rod Joe Brennan who also fished the same method as as Phil to put 6-4-0 for second.
Third on the day went to Graham Palmer who had some Roach on the bread feeder for 4-0-0.on peg 61.
1st. Phill Williams - Fosters ( peg 75 ) 11-0-0.
2nd.Joe Brennan - Fosters. ( peg 74 ) 6-4-0.
3rd.Graham Palmer - Walsall. ( peg 61 ) 4-0-0.

24TH OCTOBER 2009
A very low and slow Severn greeted the 27 matchmen for the latest in the series of S.A.M.C. opens on the Quarry section of the river.
When Fox match V.D.E. rod Paul Turner drew peg 58 he didn't fancy his chances taking in to account the conditions of the river , Paul kept it simple by fishing 8.5 mtr pole to hand, 2grm rig and size 20 hook baited with maggot and after a slow first hour with only a few small fish in the net he got the shock of his life when a Barbel snaffled his bait, a battle royal took place for the next 20 minutes when he managed to slip the net under the huge fish which went 11-5-0, this added to more small roach gave him a total of 15-5-0. and top spot.
Second on the day Was Starlets ace Scott Geens, drawn on priory wall peg 44 he opted for waggler and maggot down the middle, feeding little and often he kept a steady stream of small dace coming to the whistle to put 10-2-0 on the scales.
Two pegs below Scott on peg 46 was Fosters rod Bob Ginster, he also opted for the waggler & maggot and was rewarded with 7-12-0 of roach and third place.

17th OCTOBER 2009
A brisk autum morning greeted the twenty six matchmen for the latest S.A.M.C open on the Quarry section of the Severn in Shrewsbury and with the venue low and clear it was thought that sport would be hard but with 8lb needed to win a section it was quite the opposite.
Leading the way this week off Toll bridge peg 71 was Birkenhead rod Ian Courtney keeping it simple he set up two methods to tackle the 12ft deep swim in the shape of an 8mtr pole to hand and a 3grm bolo rig.
On the whistle Ian started by feeding six large hemp and caster filled balls of groundbait on his eight mtr line and was soon catching roach and dace on his 2grm rig baited with white maggot, then a change to the bolo fished bronze maggot in the last hour saw him take some nice perch to put an excellent 16-9-0 on the scales.
Three below the winner on peg 74 was Weston Tackle rod Ian (speedy) Ward, Ian decided to start the match on bread feeder while feeding a chopped worm line at eight metres and a waggler line down the middle.
With the bread only producing four small roach in the first thirty miniutes he swapped to his chopped worm line using a 2grm short line rig baited with lob worm, he had a perch of a pound first drop in and two smaller samples followed but this line soon dried up, swapping to an insert waggler fished red maggot just tripping bottom in ten foot deep swim soon had the roach, dace, and perch lining up to the end to finish with 15-10-0.
Final frame spot went to Ian (Teflon) Winters, drawn on Brewery peg 82 he had some nice perch topped up with a sprinkling of roach and dace on bolo fished bronze maggot in the ten foot deep swim to put 10-12-0 on the scales.

With the Severn holding an odd red colour for the last week it reflected a bit in the match weights.
Top spot this week went to frame regular Brian Rigby, drawn on Spinny peg 22 the Fosters rod started on bread feeder three parts across in the four foot deep swim and was rewarded with a 3lb chub first cast, he stayed on this method for an hour without any more fish, then a swap to waggler and maggot fished down the middle produced a steady stream of small fish to end the day on 12-0-0.
Second on the day and another frame regular was Fox Match V.D.E rod Paul Turner, drawn on end peg 39 Paul fished waggler and maggot two thirds out to take a cracking net of small roach plus a 2lb chub to put 10-7-0. on the scales.

Alan Mayer Memorial
Quarry/County Ground 17th Jan 2009
Fifty anglers attended this year’s Alan Mayer Memorial Match and it’s a good bet he would have been looking down from that big river in the sky with pride to see his old mates turning out in his honour. This week, both the County Ground and Quarry sections were used but with the river level at 1.2 metres and coloured, the weights were always going to be affected.
