This month alone 16 anglers have had first strikes on the back page
of the permit book.
September
Faced with some considerable hurdles with the additional waters has without doubt kept your Committee at the sharp end. I will now give you an update on how things are going, down on the theatre of operation. Faced with a large amount of work at Butlers, Maids and Oxon Pool, plus Monkmoor Fishery. We looked at renting machinery and also machinery with operator.
In the end it was decided to buy a suitable machine, complete the intended works various and then sell the machine. Indeed if we are lucky and have been shrewd, you never know the work may end up costing us nothing! Well we are now the proud owners of a Ford 555 JCB and about to be insured for on the road so we can move from pool to pool. I intend to give updates below and some idea of the works to be carried out, these will not be listed below not in order of importance.
BUTLERS POOL
This pool is now open for juniors in the company of Dad / Mum or Granddad / Grandma, senior must be an annual member of SAF and not intended to fish. Senior being on hand for safety and guidance. Simply go past the Albrighton Hall on your left, 100 yards on towards Harmer Hill opposite the phone box turn right into Plex Lane. Through the bends of the lane until you come to a long straight. Half way up this straight you will see a big old tree on your left, you will see the pool over the hedge and lay-by on right.
The Pool needs to have only one entrance, not two as it has now. Fences and styles will shortly be put in place. It is intended to level the bank top and also remove the bramble and dead tree, also to create some peg flat bases to infill with scalpins just to keep the peg tidy and reduce mud under feet. The lay-by opposite the pool, I have asked Highways Department if they will put pipe into the ditch for 40 yards, so we can back fill over the pipe and lay scalpin over the re-graded verge. This work will widen the current lay-by with nearly three more feet of width. Most of the above work the Ford 555 JCB will put to task.
To assist the chronic parking withonly enough space for two vehicles. After exhaustive efforts with Shropshire Council Highways Department. I am pleased to report I have secured works to remedy this situation. By virtue of a pipe being laid in the ditch for 36 metres. We are responsible for backfilling on the pipe, and levelling the verge and topping eventually with scalping. This will allow six or so vehicles to park off the road.
MAIDS POOL
In less than a month the announcement of Maids Pool has gone from nothing to a plan of action with the creation of a club known as (Maids Pool Angling Group). Maids now sports a Committee, constitution, membership of fourteen with four more attempting to join as I write. Plus after a meeting last Monday night on site a plan of peg creation was agreed by the membership and Committee. This last Thursday 19th and Friday 20th saw two member stalwarts get stuck in namely Greg White and Martin Cowley. How two men can achieve so much work in two days beggars belief, however do it they did and what a fishery this venue has made. Currently running I think sixteen new pegs with room for more, membership is being capped I believe at around 25 to 30 members. Any interested party for membership of Maids then please refer to our member clubs contact page on the home page.
Again it is intended to put the Sanderson onto this fishery to level the pathway and help with some of the heavier lifting that has already taken place.
OXON POOL
Little or no point in trying to fill you all in at this stage with the work schedule, as it is massive. Certainly we intend to concentrate on the clearing of the sluice area first, before the winter waters start to create the usual flooding and raised levels problem. The main purpose of buying the Ford 555 JCB was indeed for the Oxon Pool project and will be put to test in the creation of two car parks and as much of the path the machine will do before we get to needing to hire tracked vehicle to finish where wheels will not be allowed.
The whole area being based on wet and dry peat and as we know peat can be dry and as unsafe as wet. Greg White from Maids Pool is joining me soon, to have a look dropping the sluice area trees by chainsaw. Once work starts on this site the area will be closed to the public and any helper or SAF member visiting to view will be expected to be in hard hat and hi-viz jacket. If you have not got them on you will not get on site. Screwfix do good cheap such items.
September 2nd and work has commenced with Car Park number one felled and ready for clearing. Next week we see the sluice area being put to task. We do need some help on this so I would appreciate a call on 07813544881. If can stuff brush cuttings into a shredder the we have plenty for you. The thinning of small skits of trees 2 inches in diameter, must be 1,000’s of them, fancy a bit of pruning come be a part of SAF history. Hi-Viz waistcoat and hard hat from screwsfix and your on the team.
MONKMOOR FISHERY
Although fishing very well indeed, we have had a compliant about anglers leaving the car park gate open with the obvious ingress of livestock giving the cars a good rub and lick. To overcome this problem It has been decided to create a cattle grid to the right of the gate. Remove the existing gate and fence the gate area off, the gate being utilised at Oxon pool for one of the car parks. Now then some idiot left the gate open and a car was damaged.
Listening to SAF “Old Timers” I was informed a fence used to go from the end of the lane to the car park. This stopped the illegal use of cars on the field and put a stop to the cattle getting to the car park. Well after meetings with Shropshire Council Countryside unit. The fence will be replaced, any barbed wire left over it has been agreed we can have to strengthen the car park fence. So we want a couple of chaps to take this work on in securing the car park with the left-over.
When I started writing this news letter we were just about to make the 50,000 hits on the website. However today I have looked and we are at 52,500. What success story, don’t forget the counter dropped 4,000 hits at 16,000 hence the 52,500 differing form the running total of 48,500.
TIGHT LINES UNTIL NEXT TIME !
NEW BAILIFF MEMBERS WANTED
New waters means simply means more ground to cover, so it follows we need more on the team. If you live near one of our waters and can regularly cover it I want to hear from you. If you have spare time and roam all over the place I want to here from you. We have two levels of bailiff.
Passive Simply as it used to be for years a day permit seller. Nothing more nothing less, if you witness something quite wrong you phone in for an active bailiff support.
Active Bailiff Yes the world has changed and all too often the passive position is usurped by activities that go far beyond selling day permit. Making the angling public know you are about also does not go amiss. Capable of sticking your nose in where it is not wanted, knowing when to back off. Know the rules inside out and what you don’t know, learn. Ideal for retired Police or forces, chap or chapess.
We do not ask you to do it for nothing, you tell me you are interested first.
